Thursday Throwback: “Constant Craving”

Our fleeting focus on musique nouvelle has really put me in the mood for some retro stylee. So at long last, Thursday Throwback is….back. And what better way to return to the swing of things than with a track that really gets to the heart of how we’ve all been feeling these last few, nineties-free weeks. 1992 was a big year for k.d. lang. Months after coming out as a lesbian, Canada’s country music darling dropped Ingénue, a platinum bombshell of adult contemporary featuring lead single “Constant Craving.” The song would stay plastered on the Billboard top 40, eventually garnering the Canuck a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance of the year and several MTV Music Awards for…..whatever. It may be completely fabricated, but I have this deep set (if vague) memory of the track appearing prominently in a dour scene of an early Friends episode, so for me at least the song immediately conjures images of David Schwimmer going all sad bastard—i.e., pretty much David Schwimmer going all [insert any possible emotion]. That I listen nevertheless is further testament to what a hook-filled booby trap snare this song is. I mean just ask Mick Jagger
