So for this week’s mix I thought I’d go with a sampling of material by power pop doyen, Jason Falkner. Though his credits include stints in bands like The Three O’Clock and Jellyfish as well as a heavy supporting role on Eric Matthews’ first two LPs, Falkner has definitely released his finest work as a solo artist, notably 1996’s Author Unknown and 1999’s Can You Still Feel?. Unbelievably hooky and impeccably produced, if there is a knock I have against Falkner it’s that his songs are occasionally a bit over arranged for my taste—a symptom of the chamber pop aesthetics he shares with fellow, classically-trained wunderkinds Matthews and Rufus Wainwright. I could go for upping the slapdash by a factor of two-ish. A brief apprenticeship with Laszlo Toth would probably do the trick….
