So for today’s post, I thought I’d check out the catalog of one of my all time favorites, Girls Against Boys. Though I’m not generally a huge fan of the harder side of the rock/metal spectrum, GvsB is a notable exception. Fueled by a twin bass assault and following in the footsteps of groups like Big Black, Fugazi, and the Killing Joke, the band brought the art of muddy guitars, breakneck tempos, and menacing vocals to the 1990s. Their main selling point (at least for my money), though, was definitely the guttural, lounge-core stagger of lead singer Scott McCloud, a snarling coxswain for bad decisions on those kinds of nights your throat still feels a week later. Seriously, though, am I off base in thinking I could get just about any girl if I sounded like that?
Though admittedly the band’s fuck-off surl had grown pretty threadbare by their fifth record (their first and only major label release), they put out at least three solid albums and one absolute classic of their distinctively sludgy swagger over the course of a thirteen-year career. Anyhoo, here are some choice tracks from GvsB’s first five records, including “Bulletproof Cupid” off the aforementioned pinnacle, Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby (1993).
Ben, if by chance you do read this blog, I highly recommend you check these guys out. You would really get into Venus Luxore No. 1 Baby — it’s right along that rock/grunge sound you’ve been into lately. “Rockets Are Red” is one of my all time favorites.
