PICKED: Superchunk, Catherine Wheel, Early Day Miners

As mentioned, I made a few other purchases over the weekend. I wasn’t really looking for any of these specifically, but when you have the chance to buy a Superchunk album for $3, it’s usually a good idea to just go for it.

SuperchunkFoolish (1994)

So ya, I’ve decided that Superchunk is unfairly underrepresented in my music collection. From now on, if I come across one of their albums at a reasonable price (under $6), I will buy without hesitation. Scott and I share the opinion that The Sea and Cake/Sam Prekop are literally unable to write a bad song, but I think I would put Superchunk in that category as well. Nothing they do is bad — just solid, catchy indie rock. CIOIYL: classic 90’s indie rock — Built To Spill, Pavement, etc, a good upbeat album for spring

Catherine WheelWishville (2000)

Not their best release, but it was a dollar so I had to pick it up. To be honest it kind of sounds like a Collective Soul album, which isn’t good or bad, just a far cry from the classic Ferment and the equally heavy-hitting Chrome. A few good tracks on here make it worth it if you’re a die hard CW fan. Otherwise, stick to the Ferment/Chrome combo. CIOIYL: well executed pop/rock of the late 90’s variety, Collective Soul (and that’s not a negative)

Early Day MinersThe Treatment (2009)

This one is a little more upbeat than the tracks I posted a couple months ago from their earlier album, Offshore. Personally, I like the darker, less produced material of Offshore slightly more, but there are some great moments here that make it worthwhile if you’re looking to get into these guys. CIOIYL: pop songs that are consistently over the 3-minute mark

In other news, I saw 3EB live today. It was awesome.

  1. Mac McCaughan is truly one of the all time great not great singers. How can you not love the way his yelpy whine cuts through the chunky guitars and pounding drums. Also love the fact that this, essentially Mac and Laura’s breakup album, nevertheless has its fair share of sugar-rush. Also also, “Driveway to Driveway” because, ugh, GREAT song….
