Friday All-Nighter Mix

Pulled my first Friday all-nighter last night*. It was about as fun/worthwhile as you might expect — ie it was not. I typically refrain from such a mighty act of deprivation until the night right before a project is due, but for some reason I just couldn’t stop myself last night. One thing led to another and the next thing I know the sky is becoming not dark and I hear the depressing ding of the New York Times daily email that I signed up for years ago but never read arriving in my inbox. At that point you just give in and go to Dunken Doughnuts for a coffee and a boston creme.

The one positive of the whole ordeal was that I got some solid just-before-spring music listening in. I’m not quite into the full-on spring collection as Scott seems to be, so the tracks tended to be a little more moody and drawn out — just like my psyche… The mix:

Gutter Twins, “God’s Children” — Another great Dulli track that transitions seamlessly from dark and brooding to the perfect major chord and a catchy chorus. The hammered guitar at the 1:38 mark gets me every time.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion…, “13 Blues For Thirteen Moons” — Have you ever listened to Godspeed You Black Emperor and thought, “boy I wish they would speed this thing up a bit, add a little more guitar, and write a track that heavily features a horrible/perfect vocal part?” Well you’re in luck, that’s exactly what they did, and all 16+ minutes are worth the listen.

Grandaddy, “Where I’m Anymore” — A chorus that starts with the line “meooow, meow, meow, meooow, meow” is obviously always a winner. This is no exception.

Now for the sleep.

* And no, beer was not involved.

  1. We seem to have had a pretty similar week. 9am thursday to 5am friday. Listened to the entire 90s mix, a boatload of pearl jam and wilco and the m83 album Dead Cities at least three times (which is very eerie at 4am after not sleeping and crashing from way too much mountain dew and some fresh coffee courtesy of merlin). Also this album has emerged as my favorite modeling album of the year.

  2. Ya man, it’s going to be one hellofa final 2 weeks. Do you have any Our Lady Peace? I find them quite soothing, yet inspiring during the late hours. That and 3EB…

Also, I wish I had a Merlin to bring a coffee at studio. A coffee and a good rock. I could use a good rock. Group projects make me want to throw rocks.

  3. HA! my phone call that night was justified then, group projects are very frustrating.

Have 4 OLP* songs and no 3EB. For some reason live albums at night are just the bombdangles to me. Also i had an epic Broken Social Scene, Pinback, Sparklehorse, The Sea and Cake, and Sonic Youth mix that got me through a couple of weeks before i listened to it too much, those bands seemed to rly go well together (Sonic Youth acted as more of a refresher).
And Ben is game for New Zealand, though he may have a job and no money. All he wants to bring is a cooler.

    *I hate Blister

  4. Hey can you wait a while for this whole New Zealand thing? If you want someone to talk about rocks the entire trip it would behoove you to wait for some Merlin. I have good coffee. I have the best rocks.

  5. And I still want to talk about beer. Any spring brew to be-hold-ing?

  6. I’m glad even Matt has a fave Canadian band. I’ve prob mentioned this before, but pre-Happiness OLP is vastly superior to post-, IME. See: “Starseed,” “Naveed,” “Automatic Flowers,” “Superman’s Dead,” “Clumsy,” etc. Also, if you still read the Tracks, Andy, I think you should model your drumming on Jeremy Taggart henceforth.

  7. Dude, “All For You”, “Somewhere Out There”, “Innocent” — Gravity has some quality tracks.

    JB, PBRPBRPBRPBR. PBR.

  8. Actually, as I type this, I’m drinking Narragansett. It’s basically the Rhode Island version of PBR but with a better catch phrase: “Made on honor, sold on merit.” Very east coast.

  9. Just realized the first and last songs weren’t playing. Fixed.
