Full disclosure: Third Eye Blind’s S/T debut is one of my favorite albums of all time. And that has nothing to do with nostalgia. Ok maybe a little bit, but no jokes around, it’s good. You can act as cool/hip/so-over-the-90’s all you want, but if you haven’t heard their debut in full at least once since ’97, you’re seriously missing out. It’s pure pop perfection.
That said, I’ve spent the last 14 years of my life oblivious to the rest of the 3EB catalog. The main reasons for this are twofold: 1. S/T is so damn good, I’ve never felt the need to own anything else by them, and 2. I absolutely hated the song “Never Let You Go” when it came out — it sounds like a bad Sugar Ray song. This is not a good thing because all Sugar Ray songs are bad. Despite all this, I jumped on a used copy of Blue, their second album (featuring “Never Let You Go”), the other day and instantly realized my mistake. I shouldn’t have waited this long. I mean, while it’ll never live up to the debut, it’s pretty damn good as far as late 90’s pop goes. Just forget that it’s Third Eye Blind, forget that they ever Semi-Charmed your life, forget that you used to slow dance to Jumper in middle school, and I think you’ll find this one pretty enjoyable. So get out your bass wood, throw back a strong concoction of coffee, Mountain Dew, beer, and fruit juice, and turn on the 3EB because it’s going to be a long night.
Let’s not forget that 3EB is also the band behind perhaps the most wonderfully terrible lyrics of all time in “Non-Dairy Creamer.” Ten bucks says you won’t make it halfway through without cracking up. The Stephan Jenkins crucifixion pose that displays during the “YOUNG GAY REPUBLICANS!” refrain is beyond perfect….

Actually, my reasons for ending with the S/T are threefold: the third reason being the way Stephan Jenkins’ music/lyrics exponentially increased in crap post-Blue.
I know this is off topic, but there is a new explosions in the sky album. It’s not pop, but who doesn’t enjoy some quality post-rock?
Off topic? Hecks no. What do you think of it? I’ve listened to a few tracks but I was going to wait until it comes out Tuesday to hear the whole thing.
I haven’t actually listened… can you link a website that is streaming it or anything?
