The Joy Formidable, “Whirring”

Okay, to keep with this whole new music bent we’ve been rocking, here’s a choice bit of anthemic shoegaze from Welsh noise poppers, The Joy Formidable. A recording of the group’s absolutely epic performance at SXSW last month was what first caught my attention. I was all but hooked the moment the camera focused on the drummer making that crazy, “I’m about to go shit wild” face, and headed for the record store halfway through their four-minute outro—I mean, if nothing else, you have to be impressed with the amount of sound these guys kick out as a three-piece.  Of course, the band’s irrepressible propulsion and blissfully desperate lyrics have all the trappings of a noisier (read: cooler) Arcade Fire, and one would hope tJF eventually find similar success to Win Butler, et al. I mean, seriously, it doesn’t take a genius to see this will just about sell itself. Then again, I mostly listen to Pavement because of “cute one” Mark Ibold, so maybe I’m not the best judge….

  1. Also, if I remember correctly, you look exactly like that behind a drum set.
