Thursday Throwback: “Block Rockin’ Beats”

Thursday again, which means one day to go in this holiday-shortened week and time again for a throwback to the jubilee that was nineties alt rock. As I’ve mentioned before, one of my favorite records growing up (and actually the first my parents ever confiscated) was The Prodigy’s bedroom-shaking 1997 release, The Fat of the Land. 89X had “Breathe” on about a play-a-day schedule all that Fall, and the first few notes of that sludgy guitar line mandated an immediate stop to whatever you were doing (invariably playing Magic: the Gathering) so undivided attention might be paid. This post isn’t really about The Prodigy, though, but their compatriots (in country and sound) the Chemical Brothers and a similarly irresistible nugget of electro-funk-metal-bigbeat. Landing the same year as Fat, CBros’ sophomore effort, Dig Your Own Hole, produced the crossover semi-hit, “Block Rockin’ Beats,” which while not nearly as loved as Keith Flint’s bullwhipped ode to shared psychosis, nevertheless earned a weekly play or two on my local radio station. Carried by an insanely catchy Schoolly D sample and a Flea-ish bass groove, the track climbed into the top 40 of the Modern Rock Charts, and incredibly (read: mercifully) has somehow remained under the radar of those behind the Kia Soul’s current marketing campaign….
